The Basics of Valentines Day

February 14, 2013

To me Valentine’s Day is designed to make greeting card manufactures and flower shops money. So this year I tried to take a different approach to this day, a more positive approach one might say. I worked hard to find something to help me find a new outlook. It seems this day is all about going over the top and being extravagant. This is where I felt a positive turn could happen for those of us who are not fond of this “greeting card holiday” can use it for a more basic reminder.

As I was reading Real Marriage by Mark and Grace Driscoll, I came across something very interesting which most married couples forget: we started out as friends. Obvious as this may be, it can be forgotten in the “business” of running a home. At one point, Mark reminds us, “Husbands and wives who want their marriages to be enduring and endearing must be friends.”[1] This is where we started and many times we lose this. Grace furthers this idea of friendship, “It is easier for a woman think of doing life with a friend than a dictator or unemotional ruler.”[2]

So my question for you today, on the day of extravagance, is have you been working on the foundation? How is the root of your marriage, your friendship doing? Make today the start of a daily walk nurturing the friendship again.

Love this series of Driscoll’s & think it’s very thought provoking & REAL.
Friendship is key…. Learning this myself!

    • After all, we had to be friends first. If we keep tending the friendship, the foundation is always being cared for.

The book is well worth the read.
