“Brew-haha” between Starbucks and Chick-fil-A

March 28, 2013

Chick-fil-A and Starbucks, what do they have in common? Both have leaders who made statements regarding gay marriage, one on each side of the argument. In 2012, Dan Cathy, the President and COO of Chick-fil-A made a statement against gay marriage founded in his Biblical beliefs. Just last week Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz “told off” a shareholder who did not agree with gay marriage.

Why did I decide to take time to address this? In the town where I live, there are two Chick-fil-A’s and two Starbucks. When the brouhaha broke with Chick-fil-A, support was shown for Cathy who ‘spoke his mind and stood by his beliefs.’ Chick-fil-A Day, there was a longer line than usual at the Chick-fil-A and protestors stood out front saying Cathy ‘should stick to making chicken sandwiches.’ Yesterday, outside of the main Starbucks in town there were protestors saying Schultz “should stick to coffee.” Despite this, there was still a perpetual line around the store with people waiting for their favorite cup of brew.

How ironic. The people last year, who lauded Cathy for exercising his Constitutional right to free speech, protested the exercising of the same rights by Schultz. Those who celebrated Schultz over the last week protested Cathy last year. It would seem these rights are only legal to exercise when someone agrees with you. Here is the short of things. These two business leaders decided to take a stand in a controversial issue. They chose opposite positions. The Constitution gives them this opportunity. This freedom is a double-edged sword. Whether you agree with Cathy or Schultz, one must agree they are exercising their rights, and so are the protestors. The rights are not only given to those we agree with. After all, why would it have to be in law if we would agree all the time?
