Faith in Action

April 1, 2013

“If we are the body of Christ – and Christ came not for the healthy but the sick – we need to be fully present in the places where people are most broken.[1]

We just celebrated the resurrection of Jesus. Now is when our actions will reflect if we really believe Christ has risen. Frequently Christians will say, “The church is supposed to be the emergency room for the hurting.” Often a church feels anything but. If we are to be the body of Christ, we need not only to welcome the broken, but go to them where they are at. Go out into the world and reach the hurting and broken, living out the belief that Christ has risen.

How can we do that? Mike Yankoski lived his faith out by living on the streets with the homeless. He made his way across the country as a homeless person would. Yankoski desired to know what it meant to be homeless and live on the streets in their daily life. Not for a night or two, but for months. He committed to living with the broken to better understand.

Am I asking you to go live on the streets for months? Of course not. You could sit with the homeless person while they eat – actually share a meal with them. Ask them about themselves. Learn about them. Maybe signing up for the local Meals on Wheels to deliver food to shut-ins can be your way to reach out. As you deliver food you can share a kind word with the person. Meet your neighbor. Yes, meet your neighbor and learn about them. Volunteer in a soup kitchen. Offer to serve in the church nursery, work with the youth, or teach a Sunday school class at church.

Getting excited about the resurrection without putting the excitement into action is futile. Jesus was all about action. The disciples were always in action. Put your faith in action this week.
