Casting Crowns Acoustic Sessions Review

April 15, 2013

The perennial favorite, Casting Crowns, has accomplished the best release since their inception in 1999. To be candid, I am a Casting Crowns fan. How can you not like a band where all of the members are active pastors in their church? Their music to date has been great, but they have just outdone themselves.

Casting Crowns latest release, “The Acoustic Sessions: Volume 1” is exceptional. Released in January 2013 by Provident Label Group, the disc carries eight of its previously released songs and two new ones. Some will balk at buying a disc like this since many of the songs are already in their collection at home. As I listened to it though, I was shocked at just how different the songs are. Songs which were good and entertaining on their first release are now powerful in their new format. Songs that were powerful in the full band style are now intensely moving. These songs strip away the excellent musical arrangements we know and love, leaving the power of the words to stand in the middle of a frame of simple, reflective acoustic instrumentals.

For example, in “If We Are the Body”, you are confronted by the bold lyrics. The lyrics are in your face, even more than in the original cover, and they are heart breaking and motivating. They will stir your heart and soul. After listening to them, it made me reflect on if I am being His hands and feet or if I am sitting on my hands.

Or in “American Dream” you will feel like you are walking down a sidewalk in small-town America, looking at the store fronts thinking about your purpose. By the end of this song you will be evaluating your priorities. And this happens time and time again, every time you hear this version of the song. It will spur you to change.

This is a masterpiece worth the money to purchase. This is a CD with reflective pieces and songs to sing in worship. It is fresh. You will be moved. The best news is it was not titled, “The Acoustic Sessions”, but it was labeled “Volume 1.” I cannot wait to hear Volume 2. I hope we do not have to wait too long.

My prayer is this will be as moving for you as it was for me.
