Hold Me Jesus

May 21, 2013

When things go awry in life, it is easy to feel alone. Many people will say things like “all things will work for good” (Romans 8:28) or “you should be joyful in your trials” (paraphrase of James 1:2). While you may know, understand, and believe these Biblical truths, you cannot hold them close during the difficulties. In fact, these may be hurtful as you see God is absent from your sufferings.

This is especially true for those suffering from chronic illnesses, whether it is mental illness or a debilitating disease. Many times they will rejoice and believe there is a purpose to their trials. Just as often, if not more often, they just cannot come to believe there is something good happening. There is no good reason or purpose to the affliction.

God is there. For these times, the Spirit is there to intercede: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” (Romans 8:26, ESV) His Spirit is calling out the inner pain and darkness. Curl in the arms of The King and let the Spirit cry out for you during these times. No need to rejoice in the darkest moments or wonder what good can come from it, just let the Spirit speak for you and cry out “hold me Jesus.”

Take a moment to listen to an old Rich Mullins song, “Hold Me Jesus.” May it be the cry of not only the afflicted, but of every believer who is struggling with some issue in their life.
