Honoring the Fallen – Memorial Day

May 27, 2013

Today is when we recognize the holiday known as Memorial Day. For many in America, this is just a three-day weekend which unofficially opens the summer. For those who work regardless of the day, this will be just another work day. Yet for others, they will thank veterans when they see them, mistakenly thinking this day is for veterans.

Memorial Day is meant to honor those in the armed forces who gave their life in support of this nation. Many young men and women have given their lives for this nation. Each of them leaves someone behind. For them, Memorial Day is another day to honor their loved one and grieve their loss. Their brothers and sisters in arms will gather at Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts to remember those who did not come home. It is a solemn get together.

Please take a moment and honor the fallen and the sacrifice they, and their families, have made for you. Go to a Memorial Day ceremony at a local cemetery. Spend some time going through a national or state veteran’s cemetery. Go online and read the stories of some of the fallen. Make a donation to one of the many foundations which care for the widows and children left behind.

Make today more than the unofficial first day of summer.
