Act Like a Man or Like Jesus?

October 21, 2013

Over the weekend there was a flurry of Tweets about two conferences going on in California. One was dealing with John MacArthur’s new book while the other was called “Act Like Men.” The Act Like Men conference was designed to assist men in growing into Biblical men. I will not address either conference directly, but will direct a unique conversation which broke out on Twitter.

The well-known blogger and author, Rachel Held Evans, tweeted “How about instead of telling Christians guys to “act like men,” we encourage them to act like Jesus? It seemed like simple and wise instruction. It did break out into a unique conversation. In essence, one of the men who engaged in the conversation felt men should act like men and that statement was all that was needed.

I have a problem with that. The Bible records acceptable and unacceptable behaviors for followers of Jesus. I have not yet to see the passage that tells men how to “act like men.” What I find is the Great Commandment: Love God, love others like you love yourself. I find the great instructions for valorous behavior in the Great Commission.

Jesus lived a perfect life. His life is an example to each of us. That includes men, women, teens, and children. He did not live a life for only men to emulate. That is ludicrous! What would then be the example for women and teens? It would be like Jesus was only here for men. It does not make sense to think that way.

We need to come to an understanding that Jesus came here for all. In His being here for all, He left each of us instructions on how to His disciples. To be a Christian is to be a follower of Christ. Gender is not part of that equation. His instructions were simply for His followers. We must change our attitude to this idea so we may continue to grow in our walks with Christ.
