Lawn or Weeds?

October 22, 2013

I live in an area which is in a constant state of drought of some level. Trying to keep a green lawn during watering restrictions and a lack of substantial or regular rainfall proves to be difficult, if not impossible. If you are obeying the watering restrictions, your lawn will be in this constant state of greenish-brown. But there is a trick to it. Weeds grow great during the drought. After a couple of good rains, the weeds take off like crazy. You have bright green yard. Then with some mowing and edging from down the street it appears like you have a wonderfully green and manicured lawn. In reality, it is neatly trimmed weeds.

Many of our spiritual lives are in a constant state of drought. They are greenish-brown all the time and we are just waiting for them to fix themselves. Or we are waiting for the spiritual rainfall to get the weeds growing and greened up. Then we trim them and mow them to create a false appearance of a lawn – or in this case a healthy spiritual life.

To have a pretty yard, drought or not, requires time and effort: Using the proper plants for the climate, and even using gravel in some parts of the world. Your spiritual life is the same. Each deficit may require a different spiritual plant to assist in correcting it. More Bible reading or listening to challenging sermons may help. Or if you are too busy, quiet time and reflection on God’s Word and resting on the Sabbath may be the right prescription. What will not help is continuing to fake it.

So, are you faking your way through your spiritual life or are you carefully tending the spiritual yard?
