Book Review – The Greatest Gift

November 12, 2013

I have come across a wonderful devotional for Advent – The Greatest Gift: Unwrapping the Full Love Story of Christmas by Ann Voskamp[1]. I bought it with the intent to take a quick glance through it and see if it would be interesting. I even used the receipt as a bookmark. After reading every page of the book in one day, I threw away the receipt and started to write this.

What makes this Advent devotional so different from others? First, Voskamp does not limit herself to traditional readings of the prophecy of Jesus or of his birth like most Advent devotionals do. She addresses the waiting that advent is supposed to be – the growing anticipation of the coming of the King. This is what to expect from this book.

Working in retail over the holidays, even Christian retail stores, can kill the joy and anticipation of Christmas. In place of the joy and anticipation apathy and impatience take their place. It becomes more about counting down to the end of the season waiting for rest instead of anticipating the celebration of the arrival of the King. This book brings that joy back to the forefront.

As I reflect on this review, I realize it is more of an endorsement than a review. So, that is what it will be. I don’t want to reveal details of the book lest I steal the joy of discovery from you. I will tell you this is a transformational Advent devotional, better than any ever written by Billy Graham or Max Lucado. Go get it today and prepared to start it on December first.
