PSA – Pull Over Already!

January 16, 2014

While the great majority of my posts have a distinct theological or ethical bend to them, this one is more of a rant than with of those. But here it goes.

Yesterday I sat at a traffic light watching car after car go through an intersection while an ambulance was sitting there, lights going and sirens wailing, waiting to go through it. The ambulance had to sit there and wait until the traffic light turned red for the crossing traffic. I was red with anger.

Here is the problem: Whenever an ambulance or a fire truck has its lights and sirens going, it is going somewhere important. There is an emergency where someone’s mom, dad, sister, brother, or child is in serious need of help. When we fail to yield to these emergency vehicles we are impeding the response of this vehicle to the emergency.

You may be saying, “Whatever, I have somewhere important to go.” If you are, I will put it another way. What if they are responding to your loved one as they need life-sustaining help or they are carrying your loved one to the hospital where lifesaving procedures are going to save their life? How would you feel then if people are blocking the path of that emergency vehicle?

The bottom line – pull over and get out-of-the-way for emergency vehicles running their lights and sirens.
