Books Everyone Should Read

February 9, 2014

On Saturday, Jennifer Neyhart (@JenniferNeyhart) asked me this question: “What books do you wish you could make everyone read?” If you are interested in following this conversation, she gave this question the hashtag #booksIWantEveryoneToRead.

I was going to reply to Jennifer with a simple tweet or two. That was not going to be enough to give a good list. So, here is my current Top 15 list (in alphabetical order of author):

Unclean by Richard Beck

In Search of Deep Faith by Jim Belcher (reviewed here:

Jesus>Religion by Jefferson Bethke (reviewed here:

Life Together by Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Letters from a Skeptic by Gregory Boyd

Not Like Me by Eric Bryant (reviewed here:

Sun Stand Still by Steven Furtick

Unchristian by Kennaman & Lyons

The Problem of Pain by C.S. Lewis

The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning

Darkness is My Only Companion by Kathryn Greene-McCreight

I Am a Church Member by Thom Rainer (reviewed here:

The Journey Back to Eden by Glen Scorgie

No Future Without Forgiveness by Desmond Tutu

Evil and the Justice of God by N.T. Wright

I could go on and on with recommendations, especially if I know a person’s interests or their particular need. No matter what, I do want to encourage people to set a reading goal each year. Pick a number of books you want to read. Then pick specific titles of interest to you, but be flexible. You may see a title in a book you are reading and want to try it or a new release my grab you. Just sit down with a book and read.

Thank you Jennifer for starting this conversation on Twitter!

  1. You are welcome! I have added some of these to my “For-Real Wishlist” on Amazon!
