The Wait

June 2, 2014

“Periods of waiting are not passive, hands-in-pocket interims. Rather they are the times in life when God is preparing us for a spiritual upgrade.”[1]

I have found myself in God’s holding pattern so many times. It reminds me of when you are reading a book on an airliner and you realize you are making what feels to be the same turn over and over. So you look out the window for a few minutes and realize you are in a holding pattern because either the runway or gate below is not ready for you. So you are flying in circles to wait to arrive. The longer in the air, the more agitated you get until everyone on the plane, aircrew included, are tense and needing to land.

These two situations are so similar. When God has you in this holding pattern there is a purpose and reason – and the reason is frequently something is not ready for the next move. Sometimes it is I that am not ready for God’s “upgrade.” I am rushing to get to a point or goal and thankfully God puts me into a holding pattern to mature and restrain me from making an error. In other cases it is someone else who is not yet ready, or an opportunity which is not there yet. Regardless, it is for the good of all to be in that wait.

Like Merritt says, these times of waiting should not be passive times. These are not a time for a vacation or couch potato time. There is still work to be done, still opportunities to be had. Continue to prepare. Continue to read, study, pray, fast, give. Continue forward. Do not be idle. Just like the airliner in the sky which keeps moving we should be moving also. Deliberate motion, focused on hearing the words of God telling you when it is time to land.
